Vice

Oscar-nominated biopic of “The Big Short” director Adam McKay with Christian Bale as Dick Cheney, Vice President of the US under George Bush Junior.
From his early days as a college dropout to teaching under Richard Nixon to the pinnacle of power as Vice President of the United States, the satirical biopic “Vice – The Second Man” summarizes several decades of American history. The focus is on the unstoppable rise of a man: Dick Cheney (Christian Bale), a machiavelli of modernity.
When Cheney quit university after only a few semesters at the beginning of the 1960s, his high school girlfriend Lynne Vincent (Amy Adams) gives him an ultimatum: pull yourself together or you’re rid of me! Cheney takes the warning seriously, it’s the beginning of an incredible political career. Cheney learns under Richard Nixon, is sponsored by Donald Rumsfeld (Steve Carell), and joins George W. Bush Senior as Secretary of Defense. But his biggest coup puts all this in the shade.
The office of Vice President is traditionally more of a representative post with little power in the US. But when George Bush Junior (Sam Rockwell) looks for a seasoned second man, Cheney realizes his chance: Under Bush, Cheney manages to seize more and more power and transform the office into one of the country’s most important posts. The political hardliner leads the US into its darkest chapter yet, does not shy away from war, torture and intrigues. In the background is still his wife Lynne.
