The Kid Who Would Be King

“Attack the Block” director Joe Cornish reinterprets the Arthurian saga as a youthful adventure in which students become knights and save the world.
Actually, twelve-year-old Alex (Louis Serkis) is rather shy. When his best friend Bedders (Dean Chaumoo) is once again harassed by schoolyard hooligans Lancy (Tom Taylor) and Kaye (Rhianna Dorris), Alex overcomes his shyness and faces the bullys. When Alex passes an abandoned construction site one evening, he finds a sword there, which, as in the Arthurian saga, is in a stone. And of all Alex succeeds in pulling the sword out of the stone.
However, the boy unleashes a chain of events that catapults him and his friends into a dangerous adventure. The wizard Merlin comes as a young student (Angus Imrie), sometimes as an old man (Patrick Stewart) on Alex and assigns him with an important mission: The witch Morgana (Rebecca Ferguson) has woken from her long sleep. The sword has chosen Alex to fight Morgana.
“If you were king” – backgrounds
With his directorial debut, “Attack the Blog,” Joe Cornish (screenwriter of “Ant-Man”) has created a young cult movie in which a group of teenagers fend off an alien invasion much better than adults could have done. With “If You Are King,” Cornish now hits a similar mark, transposing the Arthurian saga into the present and transforming all the characters into adolescents who need to accomplish a great mission.
The adventure movie “If You Are King” is aimed at a younger audience than “Attack the Blog” and starring Louis Serkis, the son of the great English CGI actor Andy Serkis (Gollum in “The Lord of the Rings”) , In addition, fans can look forward to an appearance of Patrick Stewart (“Excalibur”) as old Merlin and Rebecca Ferguson (“Greatest Showman”) as a fearsome witch Morgana.
