Thanks to the musical hit “Over the Rainbow”, Judy Garland (Renée Zellweger) became a world star at the age of 17. 30 years later, she has long since become a show legend and receives a lucrative offer: she is to perform exclusively for five weeks in London’s West End theater “The Talk of the Town”. But with heavy hearts she leaves her children with Sidney Luft (Rufus Sewell), Lorna Luft (Bella Ramsey) and Joey Luft (Lewin Lloyd) in Santa Monica, USA.
Despite a weakening voice and impaired perception, Judy ensures sold-out appearances. Her sense of humor and warmth of heart not only inspires her loyal fans, but also her new lover, the much younger Mickey Deans (Finn Wittrock), and the woman who is responsible for the smooth running of the concert tour, Rosalyn Wilder (Jessie Buckley).
Growing up with MGM’s big voice and gag contract, Judy Garland enjoyed great success when she was young thanks to “The Wizard of Oz”, but became addicted to tablets due to compulsory diets. Three children, five marriages, two Oscar nominations, her own gala show on television, 40 films and an award for her life’s work at the age of 42: Judy Garland was a woman of superlatives and is still rightly regarded as a dazzling star golden hollywood era.
She died at the age of 47 in London on June 22, 1969 from an overdose of sleeping pills. Her health had already deteriorated massively in the last year of her life, she suffered from sleep and eating disorders and hepatitis.
