Second sequel to the Oscar-nominated animation adventure featuring the inventive Viking Hicks and his friendly dragon, Toothless.
When Hicks was young, they still existed, the dragons. He is good friends with a dragon and has seen dozens of nightshade adventures. But at some point their ways have to be parted. While Hicks (pronounced in the German version of Daniel Ax) as the new tribal leader together with his fiancée Astrid Hofferson (Emilia Schüle) takes over the clan of Haudrauf (Dominic Raacke), does not care about his pack. As a grown man, Hicks experiences his last adventure with Toothless.
The 3D adventure “How to Train Your Dragon 3” shows how the story of Toothless and Hicks continues after the second part and explains why there are no more dragons today. For fans of the beautiful animated films there will be a long-awaited reunion with the heroes – and a bittersweet farewell to the beloved film series. Overall, however, the film is again based more on the book template “Hicks, the Persistent Vikings” by Cressida Cowell.
Although the predecessors “How to Train Your Dragon Made Easy” and “How to Train Your Dragon 2” have done so well at the box office, the third part is unfortunately under a bad star. Actually, the sequel should come to the cinema in 2016. However, due to internal restructuring of DreamWorks Animation, the theatrical release has been postponed. One almost could have thought that the animation adventure would have fallen under the table – that was fortunately not so.
The good news for fans is that in the third part of the animated film series, the proven creative team of the predecessor takes over the helm again. As with the successful predecessors – the second part was one of the most successful films of 2014 with a grossing of $ 622 million – Dean DeBlois will once again be the director. It is also planned that with Jay Baruchel (“That’s the end”) and Gerard Butler (“300”), the old voice overs will be heard again – at least in the English original. Whether German moviegoers will again enjoy the benefit of Daniel Axt (“Snow White and Rose Red”) as Hicks, has not yet been decided.
Fans of the predecessors will not be disappointed by the third part of the “How to Train Your Dragon” series. Because the series relies on continuity and carefully develops the beloved characters. This also includes that in the German version we hear the same voice actors as in the predecessors – Daniel Ax (“snow white and rose red”) as Hicks, Emilia Schüle (“The incredibles 2”) as Astrid, Dominic Raacke (“dam)” as Haudrauf and Martina Hill (“I – just incorrigible 3”) as Hicks mother Valka.
When the first part of the Dreamworks franchise came out in 2010, “How to Train Your Dragon” turned out to be a real surprise hit. Based on the children’s book by Cressida Cowell told the animation adventure of the slender Viking boy Hicks, which solves problems rather brains, instead of like his father Haudrauf (English Gerard Butler, German Dominic Raacke) to rely on muscle strength alone. One day, Hicks makes a discovery that forever changes the life of his tribe. He is the first Viking to succeed in taming a mighty dragon. Soon the two associate an inseparable friendship.
With nearly $ 495 million grossing, “How To Train Your Dragon” was one of DreamWorks’ most successful animation franchises alongside the Shrek movie series. No wonder that soon worked on a successor. “How to Train Your Dragon 2” was released in 2014, continuing the story of Hicks and Toothless almost seamlessly. Five years after the events of the first part, dragons and Vikings live peacefully side by side. But the ruthless dragon hunter Drago Bloodfist (Wolfgang Wagner) sets out to attack Dragon Island.
Like its predecessor, “How To Train Your Dragon 2” was nominated for the Oscar for Best Animated Film. The family-friendly cinema adventure was able to clear away the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Film in 2015.
