Muriel is the young mother of a seven-year-old boy, Kipp, and the unhappy wife of a man who beats her, Tommy. One day, not being able any more, she fled with Kipp. On her way to California, where she hopes for a better life, she makes a stop at her aunt Tess, the woman who raised her. In order to help him, Tess gives him money as well as his car. But meanwhile, Tommy, who understood that Muriel would not come back, lodges a complaint for child abduction.
