Cats

Star-studded musical adaptation of “Les Misérables” director Tom Hooper, in which the Jellicle cats meet for the annual ball.
There is anticipation on the garbage dump: The annual ball of the Jellicle cats is coming. The big festival is not just a reunion for the whole flock of cats, but also represents the opportunity to climb into the Heaviside layer and thus start a new life.
Before the time comes, each of the mild-mannered, sometimes slightly scratchy characters tells their story, accompanied by wonderful songs and passionate singing and dancing. This is how the gray cat Gus (Ian McKellen), who looks back on his greatest success, introduces himself. We also get to know the glamor cat Grizabella (Jennifer Hudson), cat lady Bombalurina (Taylor Swift) and the white velvet paw Victoria (Francesca Hayward). But before a decision can be made, the festival is disrupted by the evil cat Macavity (Idris Elba) …
The musical “Cats” is one of the great successes of the British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber (“Evita”, “Starlight Express”). More than 50 million people have seen the charming cat ball worldwide, songs like the play “Memory” by the cat Grizabella have long been part of popular culture. A film adaptation of the musical is long overdue. In 2019 the time has finally come – under the direction of Tom Hooper (“Les Misérables”) “Cats” will be released in German cinemas on December 25, 2019.
A special extra comes from Andres Lloyd Webber himself: Together with Taylor Swift, he contributes a new song that was recorded especially for the film. “Beautiful Ghosts” is the icing on the cake of the soundtrack, which is otherwise filled with the musical’s well-known hits. Swift will release their version of the song on November 15, 2019 and will also be in the running for the best film song at the relevant award ceremonies in 2020.
After the trailer, the audience has reacted to the look of the figures and their proportions in a split way. A special mix of motion capture technology and computer graphics (CGI) was used to transform the human actors into their feline shapes. With these components, the actors were equipped with fur, whiskers, tails and ears. Regular settings were used as far as possible for the locations. One thing is certain: the film provides a lot of conversation material in advance – we will find out from the end of December 2019 whether the filming is linked to the success of the musical.
No cost or effort was spared to cast the fantastic musical film: the actress of main character Victoria – Francesca Hayward – normally dances in the Royal Ballet of London, with “Cats” she now also takes the plunge on the big screen. Prominent support is provided by Dame Judi Dench (“Victoria and Abdul”), Sir Ian McKellen (“The Good Liar”), Idris Elba (“Hobbs & Shaw”), moderator and comedian James Cordon and Rebel Wilson (“Pitch Perfect” ). In addition to the international music stars Taylors Swift and Jason Derulo, the French dancers “Les Twins” will also be there.
