What is the life of a faithful four-legged man? Dog Bailey loves to fool around, catch balls, eat, lazy – principal, his master is there. Little Ethan (Bryce Gheisar) and his dog puppy Bailey are a well-established team and they grow together together: Ethan becomes a teenager (played by K.J. Apa), who impresses the girls (especially Nicole LaPlaca) thanks to his sweet dog. But Bailey’s short dog life is coming to an end and Ethan has to say good-bye. When Bailey awakens in a new dog body, he realizes that his life is longer than it seemed, he is always born again! Thus, the casual dog learns the world as a German shepherd dog lady in the police service and as a cuddly pet of a girl. One day he meets Ethan again. He is meanwhile a mid-40 man (played by Dennis Quaid) and Bailey, of course, looks quite different from what was then. Still, the two are strangely familiar. Will Ethan recognize his bailey?
From the dog’s perspective, this entertaining comedy takes us on the emotional voyage of our favorite pets. Director Lasse Hallström (“Chocolat”) seems to have a passion for films with animal-filled main roles, he already staged the drama “Hachiko – A wonderful friendship” in 2009, where a dog Richard Gere steals the spotlight. “Bailey” is based on the American bestselling novel “A Dog’s Purpose: A Novel for Humans” by the humorist W. Bruce Cameron, who is also responsible for the script adaptation in collaboration with Cathryn Michon. The book has already been continued with a second part of the dog stories – whether the film will also bring this success, remains to be seen.
